Local weather conditions

Singapore is known for its hot and humid weather, with little variation throughout the year. The average daytime temperature is 31ºC (88ºF), dropping to around 24ºC (75ºF) in the evenings. The monsoon season can bear down heavily on our tropical weather from November till February, so be prepared for rain on a daily basis during this period. 

 

Currency

The currency used in Singapore is the Singapore dollar (S$). Money changing services can be found not only at Singapore Changi Airport but also at most shopping centres and hotels around the island. You can also access the automated teller machines (ATMs) located that accept most of the main credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

 

People

Today, the majority of the Singaporean population is ethnic Chinese, followed by the country’s original inhabitants, the Malays. The remaining population originates from India, followed by Eurasians and Asians of different origins.

 

Language

As a reflection of its collage of cultures, Singapore has adopted one representative language for each of the four major ethnic or 'racial' groups. The four official languages in Singapore's constitution are English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Although Malay is the national language, English is the common language used for business, government and medium of instruction in schools. While English is the main language taught in schools, children also learn their mother tongues to ensure that they stay in touch with their traditional roots.

 

Travelling Within Singapore

·  Singapore MRT

The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is probably the fastest way to get around Singapore besides taxis. Besides being one of the cleanest transport systems in the world, the MRT provides scenic views of our heartland and city areas, with great access to almost every part of Singapore. You can download the train route map for a complete listing of train services and use it to navigate your way around Singapore.

 

There is a host of ticketing schemes based on stored value smartcards to suit your needs – from standard one-time travel tickets to tourist concession passes. Stored value cards, locally known as ez-link cards, can be purchased from the TransitLink Ticket Office located at selected MRT stations, and standard value tickets may be purchased from General Ticketing Machines (GTMs) located at all MRT stations.

 

You may top up your ez-link cards at any Transitlink Ticket Office or GTM using cash or NETS. The minimum top-up value is S$10 while the maximum stored value allowed on your card is S$100. You may also choose to buy a Standard Ticket that can be used up to six times within 30 days from the date of purchase.

 

Singapore’s train operators have taken various steps to ensure accessibility for wheelchair users, families with children in strollers, the visually impaired and those travelling with luggage or large packages, ensuring that all your needs are well taken care of when you access the trains here. 

 

·  Taxi

You should be able to hail a cab without any problems in most parts of Singapore. You may want to remember though, that vehicles are not allowed to wait or even stop at parts of the roads with painted double yellow or jagged lines. It is always best to get a cab from one of the numerous taxi stands in Singapore – hotels and shopping centre taxi stands are a sure bet. 

 

If you’re travelling in a group or carrying a load of shopping or luggage, you may want to book a taxi to your designated location. Here are the hotlines for various taxi services in Singapore, which will come in handy if you end up in a more obscure part of the island where the traffic is sparse, or if you are unable to find a taxi during peak hours or any other reason. If you’re coming from an entertainment or dining venue, most concierge services will also be happy to call a taxi for you.

Operating within an intricate network of routes, all local bus services are equipped with air-conditioning and provides trunk, feeder, Express, Townlink and Premium services. 

 

Plus, if you have access to iris (Intelligent Route Information System) NextBus service, it’s highly unlikely to lose your way around Singapore. Offering bus arrival time estimation on a real time basis, the iris Journey Planner provides travel solutions by bus based on the cheapest fare, shortest walking distance or shortest travelling time.

 

Cell Phone Usage

Singapore’s international dialing code is +65. While in Singapore and if you have international roaming service on your cell phone, you don’t have to press +65 as it will automatically connect you to the local numbers here. 

 

Smoking Regulations

Besides air-conditioned areas such as shopping centres, restaurants, entertainment outlets and cinemas, smoking is also an offence on public transportation, lifts and certain public areas.

Grand Hyatt Singapore offers valet service and on-site self-parking facilities for 500 vehicles.  Our multi-storey covered carpark is accessible via Scotts Road before turning up into the hotel’s driveway.  Turn left and follow the parking signs into the carpark entrance.

Taxis
Singapore has over 15,000 air-conditioned metered cabs providing comfortable transportation island-wide, 24 hours a day. Taxis are readily available at the entrance of our hotel.

The flag down rate is between SGD 2.80 – SGD 3.00 for a normal cab and SGD 3.20 for a limousine cab. Subsequent increments are SGD 0.20 for every 385 m (up to 10 km) and SGD 0.20 for every 330m (after 10 km). Additional surcharges are applicable based on the time of day, location, and for advance bookings.

Trains (MRT)
Taking the train (MRT) is one of the easiest ways to travel around the island. To locate an MRT station, simply look out for the MRT signs displayed along main roads, and the beacons and signs prominently displayed outside stations. Take a brisk five-minute walk from Grand Hyatt Singapore to reach Orchard station, the closest MRT station to our hotel.

You may choose to purchase either a stored-value smartcard (EZ link card) or standard value ticket. Stored-value cards can be purchased from the TransitLink Ticket Office located at selected MRT stations and standard value tickets may be purchased from the General Ticketing Machines located at all MRT stations. The first train usually departs at 5:30 am and the last train departs at 11:18 pm.

Hotel History

Hyatt Regency Singapore opened in 1971, as what was then the largest hotel opened by Hyatt International with 700 rooms. Renamed in 1988 as Grand Hyatt Singapore, the hotel went through its first major remodeling in October 2003 of the lobby.

 

November 2010 saw the opening of The Gallery, the first of its kind events space in Singapore which was designed after an art gallery.   As part of Grand Hyatt Singapore’s efforts to incorporate sustainable practices and systems, the hotel successfully installed a revolutionary town gas engine driven Trigeneration Plant in October 2011 – a plant that produces three useful effects to meet the hotel’s electricity, hot water or steam, and dehumidification of fresh air intake.
